After the Storm: How AI Is Transforming the Way Florida Processes Building Permits

Propmodo

Florida's mix of rapid growth, an affordability crisis, and near-annual hurricane recovery has turned permitting into critical infrastructure, and made the state a leading testing ground for AI-powered plan review. Propmodo's feature examines how building departments are using AI to keep pace with a surge in applications, including complex post-disaster rebuilds.

Swiftbuild, founded in 2024 by two University of Florida alumni, is among the companies featured. The company has signed more than $3 million in contracts with Florida governments and developers, including Jacksonville, Titusville, Hernando County, and Walton County, to speed permitting without sacrificing code compliance.

Co-founder Sabrina Dugan points to coastal communities, where permitting is a matter of life-safety: making sure homes aren't built in flood zones or hurricane evacuation areas.
